How to choose a table lamp

Match the height to the surface

On a bedside table, 240–340 mm sits below eye level when you’re lying down, which is what you want. On a sideboard or console, 380 mm and up reads as an object rather than a utility.

Pick the finish for the room, not the lamp

Matte white disappears into pale walls and glows warmest. Matte black holds its shape against a busy shelf. Terracotta, olive and lilac are for people who’ve already decided.
